Summertime on the farm means sunshine, green pasturesโฆ and unfortunately, swarms of flies. Each year, I mix up a batch of my homemade livestock spray to help keep our animals comfortable. The cows arenโt exactly fans of the spraying part, so I usually set out their grain, hand out a few animal crackers, and start spritzing while theyโre happily distracted.

This recipe came together after reading countless other livestock spray ideas and experimenting with what really works. I wanted the flies to leave our beautiful animals alone without resorting to harsh, chemical-laden store-bought sprays. Many commercial options come with scary warning labels โ some even require gloves to apply. Thatโs not something I want on my animals, in our beef later on, or anywhere near our farm family.

๐ All-Natural Livestock Spray
Ingredients:
- 2 cups apple cider vinegar (base to repel insects)
- 2 cups water
- 20 drops citronella essential oil
- 15 drops lemongrass essential oil
- 15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil (soothing)
- 1 tablespoon liquid castile soap (helps oils mix with water)
Instructions:
- Pour all ingredients into a clean spray bottle.
- Shake well before each use (essential oils will separate over time).
- Lightly mist over the animalโs coat, avoiding eyes, nostrils, and sensitive areas.
- Apply once or twice a day during heavy fly season.

๐ Tips & Notes:
- For sensitive animals, test on a small patch of fur first.
- Always dilute essential oils properly โ especially on young animals.
- You can swap ACV for white vinegar if the smell is too strong.
- Store in a dark, cool place to preserve the effectiveness of essential oils.
